Before forming Toto the members of the group did sessions for Steely Dan,[3] Seals and Crofts,[4Seals and Crofts,[4] Boz Scaggs and Sonny and Cher. The guitarist Steve Lukather is the band's vocalist.
About Toto
Toto was founded in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro, David Paich (who at the time were also acclaimed studio players working with Boz Scaggs) and bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. The group took their name from the Latin word that means "all-encompassing" and was determined to explore all styles of music.
In 1981 the third album by Toto Turn Back was a flop, but they rebound with their fourth release Isolation that features two hits, including the title track and Roseanna. The album and tour made Toto a household name across the world.
After a short hiatus, Toto returns with the album Fahrenheit. The album is an departure from the ballads that were featured on previous albums, and also features some heavy rock. The album was their first album to go platinum in North America.
In the course of recording the fifth album, the group loses its manager and faces financial difficulties. They decide to record a new album and change their name to an entirely different producer. Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, takes over Fergie Frederiksen as the lead vocalist. Joseph is a more natural frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a needed boost.
In 1999, the band releases Mindfields and begins an extensive worldwide tour. After a few months in Europe they come to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a brief break, Toto resumes their recording and releases their first live album entitled Absolutely Live in 1993. This includes a cover version of Weezer's hit song Hash Pipe as a response to the band's performance in Africa on their recent tour. Toto's touring group includes drummer Lenny Castro and bassist Shannon Forrest along with keyboardist Shem Von Schroeck.

In addition to the original members keyboardist Greg Tambu filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate filled in for Shem Von Schroeck.

But, the group recommenced performing in 2012 following the release of their album 40 Trips Around the Sun.
The album was a return to their best form and the tour that came with it featured sold-out concerts in North America and Europe. Toto's reunion was made more exciting by the inclusion of guitarist Steve Lukather and bassist Shem von Schroeck, both of whom had joined the group.
